The development of vaccines and the search for possible drugs against the novel Coronavirus, SARS-CoV-2, to run on high tours. The good news is that 31 is already approved and active agents may be suitable for the treatment and prophylaxis of infection.
A group of European scientists has tested in medical databases, if there is already a well-known drug »Nebenwirkungen« against SARS-CoV-2 show. The researchers focused their search on so-called broad-spectrum antivirals. These active ingredients inhibit the reproduction of viruses from two or more virus families.
Of 120 approved broad-spectrum antiviral drugs, the researchers gave 31 as a possible candidate for the prevention and treatment of SARS-CoV-2 infections. These include the antimalarials chloroquine and the Ebola active ingredient Remdesivir, include, for example, they write in the journal »International Journal of Infectious Diseases«. Also in Japan, the approved anti-Influenza drug Favipiravir is, as well as the HIV-active substances, Lopinavir and Ritonavir. The latter were, however, disappointed in a first clinical study.
Ebola drug against Covid-19
“I think Remdesivir for particularly promising”, says Professor Dr. Ulf Dittmer, the Director of the Institute for Virology at the University of Essen hospital. “This drug was originally developed to combat Ebola. The SARS-CoV-2 Virus and the Ebola Virus are in need of a Protein together, the both viruses to multiply. By Remdesivir this Protein loses its function.” The results of a first clinical study from Wuhan to give according to him, there is reason to believe that this drug could help. Further studies will be needed.
The Federal Ministry of health classifies the Virus triggered a disease, Covid-19, and the Lack of therapy options as so threatening that it has taken specific measures. For example, it is allowed, in the meantime, the competent land authorities, temporary agents for the treatment of Covid-to bring 19 in transport, which are not yet authorised in the EU. »This happens bereits«, Dittmer know. “Non-approved drugs can be used in the context of a so-called individual treatment attempt, what is practiced in NRW in terms of SARS-CoV-2 already.”
Vaccine within the nänext year
A vaccine against the Virus, according to Dittmer also predicted: “Many will say that already in a year can be expected." This is extremely fast, because usually it takes about ten years from development to approval of a vaccine. In this case, however, it is realistic. "Because it can go faster, shows the example of Ebola. Here was also brought within one year of a vaccine on the market.
Add to this that there is already a vaccine for a different Coronavirus, MERS-Coronavirus, existiert", the doctor declared. "It also requires a test phase, and clinical studies to have dangerous side-effects to exclude. It takes about a year."
