- In her newest Instagram video, Dr. Pimple Popper Removes a pilomatricoma from above a patient’s eyebrow.
- A pilomatricoma is a typically benign skin tumor that occurs near hair follicles.
- The tumor is filled with “a mix of calcium and bone, so it’s not poppable,” per Dr. Pimple Popper
Just when you think dermatologist Sandra Lee, MD can’t introduce you to any new, exciting pimples, she pulls another one of her pimple-popping magic hat. This time, it’s a type of cyst called a pilomatricoma.
What a mouthful, right? Before I dig right in to the video, a little about pilomatricomas: Per the U.S. National Library of Medicine (NLM), a pilomatricoma is a type of (usually) benign skin tumor that occurs in the same area as hair follicles like the head, neck, arms, and legs. (FYI: There is a malignant type of this tumor, called a pilomatrix carcinoma, which typically occur in older people).
Most people who are diagnosed with a pilomatricoma are actually genetically predisposed for the cyst, as the tumor results from a gene mutation in which the body produces too much beta-catenin, which forms a pilomatricoma of hard, chalky protein near a hair follicle.
Super interesting, but back to the post: “Had to break out my #cowboy skills on this Pilomatricoma,” Dr. Pimple Popper wrote in her Instagram caption for the video, which can actually be seen in its entirety on Dr. Pimple Popper’s YouTube channel.

The video, titled “The Pilomatricoma and the Lasso,” starts off with Dr. Pimple Popper’s patient explaining how she discovered the tumor above her eyebrow while she was pregnant. “It was like if a mosquito bit me and then it stayed,” she says. All of this is happening, of course, while Dr. Pimple Popper pokes and prods at the patient’s bump with her fingers.
Dr. Pimple Popper eventually slices into the bump to start the process of extracting it, and after lots and lots and lots of cutting, Dr. Pimple Popper finally reveals the white of the large, hard cyst above her patient’s eyebrow.
“I think she has a pilomatricoma, and that’s why it’s so hard,” Dr. Lee says in the video. “A pilomatricoma is like a different type of cyst that’s more chalky, and kind of like, bumpy, and stiffer. They’re harder to get out because they’re kind of stuck to you.”
In order to extract the cyst, she squeezes it, rolls it around, and then lances the tumor in order to extract it with a lasso-shaped tool (hence the video’s name). Once the cyst is out, Dr. Pimple Popper stitches up the gash on the patients face, and then proceeds to show her the large, white, stone-like cyst.
“It’s like a macadamia nut,” Dr. Pimple Popper says, as she cuts open the extracted cyst to show her patient. “It’s like a mix of calcium and bone, so it’s not like it’s poppable.”
