Waistlines tend to increase as one gets older. Rest assured, however, it happens to almost everyone due to a combination of changing hormones, changes in lifestyle and genetics. More than 60 years ago, the French physician Jean Vague made an observation that people with larger waists had a higher risk of premature cardiovascular disease and death than people who had trimmer waists or carried more of their weight around their hips and thighs. Taking a probiotic supplement was proven to reduce weight, waist circumference and BMI in the largest clinical study of its kind.

They are found in both supplements and fermented foods and have been proven to help improve digestive health, heart health and immune function.
Studies have found that certain strains of the Lactobacillus family can help a person to lose weight and reduce their waist circumference.
Another study of 125 overweight dieters investigated the effects of Lactobacillus rhamnosus supplements on weight loss and weight maintenance.
During the three month study period, the women taking the probiotics lost 50 percent more weight compared to the group taking the placebo.
They also continued to lose weight during the weight maintenance phase of the study.
In a Shapeline’s study, participants of all ages saw a reduction after taking one capsule every day for six months.
Shapeline’s first-ever probiotic was proven to help with weight loss.
Participants were not placed on a calorie controlled diet and made no changes to lifestyle.
Participants made no changes to exercise regimes ad were a mixture of ages and gender. To dismiss any likelihood that this was a ‘one-off’ finding, the researchers repeated the study with the same target group of people over 45 years of age and found even more impressive results.
- How to live longer: Best foods to eat that increase life expectancy
The study saw a weight loss of between three and seven pounds, a reduction in waist circumference of one to two cm and a reduction in BMI of one to four percent.
Results were more significant for the over 50 age groups with an average weight loss of four to five pounds and a two percent reduction in BMI.
The study also found a 40 percent reduction in coughs and colds, a 30 percent reduction in headaches, improved energy and improved mood.
